Privacy Policy
Last updated 3 October 2026
This policy explains what information Metaphrast (“we”, “us”) collects when you use Metaphrast on the website and in the iOS and Android apps (the “Service”), why we collect it, who we share it with and the choices you have. In short: we collect only what we need to translate, run your plan and keep the Service working. We don't sell your information, show ads or track you across other apps and websites.
1. What we collect
- Text you translate. The text you enter, the language you translate into and the accent you choose. Please don't enter passwords, health details or other sensitive personal information.
- Your account. You can use the Free plan without one. If you sign in, which paid plans need, we keep your email address, your plan and whether your subscription is active.
- Payments. Payments on the website are handled by Stripe, and in the apps by Apple or Google. We never see your card details. We receive a customer or subscriber ID, which plan you bought and whether it is active.
- Usage counts. To apply each plan's limit, we record the time of each translation. When you are signed in it is counted against your account. When you aren't, it is counted against a scrambled code made from your IP address (a hash), never the address itself.
- Reports. When you report a translation as wrong, we mark that saved translation so it isn't shown again. We don't store anything about who reported it.
- Technical logs. Like most websites, our servers and hosting provider keep short-lived logs, such as IP addresses, times and errors, to keep the Service running and secure.
- On your device. The website and app keep a few settings on your device, such as the background you chose and, if you sign in, your sign-in so you stay signed in. We don't use advertising or analytics cookies.
2. How we use it
- To translate your text and show how to pronounce it.
- Our translation database. Text you translate is stored, without your name or account, to answer repeat requests faster and improve the Service. We keep the original text, its translation and pronunciation, the language, the accent and the plan it was made on. The pronunciations of single words also go into a word list that helps us check future answers. Translations reported as wrong are no longer reused.
- To run your account, your plan and its limits, and to take payments.
- To prevent abuse, such as getting around the limits, and to keep the Service secure.
- To understand our costs. We record which AI model handled each request and how much it cost, with the plan but nothing that identifies you.
- To reply when you contact us.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, we rely on these legal bases: performing our contract with you (translating, accounts, plans and payments), our legitimate interests (preventing abuse, security, and improving the Service through the translation database) and our legal obligations (for example keeping tax records).
3. Who we share it with
We share information only with the companies that help us run the Service, and only what each one needs:
- Anthropic, our AI provider, receives the text you enter so its Claude models can produce the translation and pronunciation, under its commercial terms for business customers.
- Supabase hosts our database and sign-in: your email, plan, usage counts and the translation database. It also sends your sign-in codes.
- Vercel hosts the website and the server the apps talk to.
- Stripe handles payments on the website.
- Apple, Google and RevenueCat handle subscriptions bought in the apps. RevenueCat receives your account ID and your purchase history so we know which plan you have.
- Your device's voices. Audio is played with the voices built into your phone or browser. Some browsers use online voices from the browser's maker (for example Google voices in Chrome), and then your browser sends the text being read aloud to that company.
We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of our users or others, or as part of a sale or merger of the Service, in which case this policy continues to apply to it.
4. How long we keep it
- Your email and plan: until you delete your account.
- Usage counts: cleared after 31 days.
- The translation database and word list: kept for as long as they are useful to the Service. They aren't linked to you, so we can't look up “your” translations, but if you send us the exact text and language of something you translated, we will delete it.
- Payment records: kept by Stripe, Apple and Google for as long as the law requires.
- Technical logs: a few days to a few weeks, depending on the provider.
5. Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time under Account on the website or in the app, or by asking us. This deletes your email, your plan record, your usage counts and the purchase history RevenueCat keeps for your account, and it cancels a subscription bought on the website straight away. A subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play can only be cancelled there, so cancel it in your store's subscription settings too.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, including in the EEA, the UK and California, you may have the right to access the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, receive a copy of it, object to or restrict how we use it, and withdraw any consent you gave. To use these rights, email us at metaphrast.co@gmail.com. We will reply within one month. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. We don't sell or “share” personal information as California law defines those words.
7. Where your information is processed
Our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where the law requires it, transfers are protected by safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
8. Security
All traffic is encrypted with HTTPS, our database can only be reached by our own server, and IP addresses are stored only as hashes. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you if a breach affects you, as the law requires.
9. Children
Metaphrast isn't directed at children under 13, or under 16 in the EEA and the UK, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has given us personal information, email us at metaphrast.co@gmail.com and we will delete it.
10. Changes
We may update this policy; the date at the top shows the latest version, and we will tell you about important changes before they apply. The Terms of Use cover the rest of our agreement with you.
11. Contact
Metaphrast is run by Metaphrast. For questions about this policy or your information, email us at metaphrast.co@gmail.com.
